Previously on the Smole, the contestants had to harvest coffee beans in pairs while avoiding elimination from the mission. Marshall, Mandy and Beverly succeeded in adding 80 points to the pot which is now at 253/350 points. However, Beverly's success did not follow through to her quiz as she was the next to be executed. Only 7 remain as they travel to Sao Paten. Which of them is the Mole?
●◆●◆●◆●
Caitlin: "I find it hard to accept that Bev is gone. We had a plan to find out what everyone put as their traits to try and crack the code to choosing the Mole. We worked so well as a team. Were we wrong? Or was it just bad luck?"
●◆●◆●◆●
Marshall: "It was a long journey. We were tired when we arrived at Sao Paten. We were divided into two taxis. Five of us in one, and Carolina and Avery in another. The taxi I was in was suddenly stopped by the police. I didn't understand what they were talking about but they did a search and found narcotics in the glove compartment, so we were accused of being in cahoots and thrown into jail. For the record, I have never and will never do drugs. This is all a mistake."
●◆●◆●◆●
There is an ongoing war against drugs, and five of the contestants have been accused of committing the crime. They are locked in a maximum security prison...at least a former one. It has since been abandoned, but the main prison system in Sao Paten is overcrowded so the contestants have been held here temporarily.
However, the state has implemented a "Remission for Reading" programme that enables inmates to reduce their sentence by reading and writing a thoughtful book review. The contestants can exploit this to reduce their sentence to effectively 0 and be free. There are 15 half-written reviews. Each review completed correctly earns 10 points for the pot. However, the contestants are locked in their cells.
Carolina and Avery, the two contestants with the fewest votes to them being the Mole, have managed to sneak into the prison. They have the whole night to smuggle books for the others to read. But they must of course avoid being caught or they too will be thrown into jail.
Avery: "We're in!"
Carolina: "Shh! Keep it down. You take right, I take left. We meet back here in 2 minutes."
Avery: "Oh this is just a shower. Oops."
Carolina: "This is a holding cell but nobody's here."
Avery: "Let's go upstairs."
Cecelia: "Psst. Over here."
Avery: "Cecelia!"
Carolina: "Shh!"
Avery: "The door's locked."
Cecelia: "You can slide a book through the flap."
Avery: "We'll keep looking. Take off your heels. It's too noisy."
Carolina: "No way am I stepping on the grime. You're taking this too seriously. Remember it's a game."
Carolina: "Avery, watch out! There's a security camera. We should avoid it."
●◆●◆●◆●
Carolina: "Avery, wait. This room's unlocked."
Avery: "What's in it?"
Carolina: "Nothing. It's an empty room."
Avery: "So we can't go straight through?"
Carolina: "Not with those cameras watching. Let's go upstairs."
●◆●◆●◆●
Carolina: "Ba."
Marshall: "Carolina!"
Marshall: "Go away."
Carolina: "What?"
Marshall: "You shouldn't see me in this state."
Carolina: "You're not actually in jail, Ba. It's just a game."
Marshall: "Still, this is too shameful. To see your Ba locked up in this tiny cell."
Carolina: "...I'll just find a book and slide it through. Be right back."
Avery: "Hello? Anyone in there?"
Carolina: "Don't bang on the doors, Avery. For the love of God."
Carolina: "Avery! Watch out!"
"1 MINUTE TILL LOCKDOWN."
Avery: "What the? What's going on?"
Carolina: "You were spotted! We have to hide somewhere!"
Avery: "Where?"
Carolina: "There was an empty room downstairs. Follow me!"
Carolina: "In here!"
"LOCKDOWN INITIATED. PATROL IN PROGRESS."
"PATROL IN PROGRESS."
Avery: "There are guards!"
Carolina: "Shh."
"LOCKDOWN DEACTIVATED."
Carolina: "That was a close one. I think the door has unlocked. We can go back out now."
Carolina: "Stick close to me."
●◆●◆●◆●
Carolina: "Avery was being so noisy throughout the mission. It was probably only 10 to 15 minutes in before he activated a lockdown."
●◆●◆●◆●
Avery: "This one's unlocked. Carolina, I found a bookshelf."
Carolina: "At last."
Avery: "Which one should I take?"
Carolina: "Take all. We don't know which ones are used for the reviews at the end. Give some to me."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Carolina: "Take these books and study hard."
Marshall: "Don't tell your father what to do. I know the importance of reading."
Marshall: "Of Mice and Men."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Avery: "Found more books."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Carolina: "This cell's empty."
Avery: "Uh Carolina? Looks like we have some unwanted visitors. If only they let me keep my rifle."
Carolina: "It's just a game. And we're technically the trespassers. Come on now, let's find another route."
Avery: "How many of them are there?"
Carolina: "Shh. We'll take the spiral stairs down."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Mandy: "Avery, over here."
Avery: "Oh hey Mandy. Didn't see you there. Was trying to avoid all the guards and cameras."
Avery: "Since you're here, here are a few books for you."
Mandy: "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Psycho. This might keep me busy for a while."
Carolina: "Let's go up. Nobody else is here."
"1 MINUTE TILL LOCKDOWN!"
Avery: "Shit."
Carolina: "Avery!"
Avery: "It ain't me."
Carolina: "Nevermind that. We need to find somewhere to hide!"
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Carolina: "We just need to stay really quiet."
"LOCKDOWN DEACTIVATED."
Carolina: "For the love of God, Avery. Be careful with the cameras."
Avery: "It ain't me! I swear! I had my eye on the camera the whole time and tiptoed close to the stairs to avoid it!"
Carolina: "Whatever. Let's just get out of here."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Marshall: "Do you have any more books for me?"
Avery: "Naw. I need to find more books."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Carolina: "Try to carry more than two this time. We don't know when we'll find the next shelf."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Avery: "Here ya go."
Cecelia: "Sun Tzu's Art of War? And Frankenstein? What an interesting choice."
Carolina: "Seraphine, read these as fast as you can."
●◆●◆●◆●
Seraphine: "I felt powerless in the mission. All I could do was wait for Carolina and Avery to hand me books. I couldn't do much to influence the mission."
●◆●◆●◆●
Caitlin: "Was I forgotten? I know for sure the mission started a while ago but I was waiting and waiting and waiting and nothing was going on."
●◆●◆●◆●
Avery: "I'm tired and hungry."
Carolina: "Push on Avery."
Avery: "Shit. RUN!"
Carolina: "Crap crap crap."
Carolina: "There's a bookshelf here. But I'll get to that later. I need to find safety first."
Avery: "AAH! AAH! CAROLINA HELP!"
Avery: "Fuck it's a dead end."
Samuel: "Get down on the floor."
Avery: "I ain't committed no crime!"
Samuel: "I SAID GET DOWN ON THE FLOOR!"
Avery: "Ow!"
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Carolina: "This should be far enough. I think the guard went after Avery instead. Sorry but it's every Sim for themself."
Carolina: "What are these? Oh, these are the partial reviews."
●◆●◆●◆●
Carolina: "I stumbled upon the partial reviews the others had to fill in at the end of the mission. I could deduce many of them because the books were required readings in school. Now that I know what the books are, I can focus on only those."
●◆●◆●◆●
Carolina: "To Kill A Mockingbird, Frankenstein, Animal Farm, To Kill A Mockingbird, Frankenstein, Animal Farm...aha, I found Animal Farm."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Sarah: "Why do you have a book?"
Sarah: "I'll be taking that from you. First you smuggle drugs, now you smuggle books?"
Seraphine: "Yes. Bully me more. Torture me. Treat me like a second-class citizen. I want to feel what it's like to have no agency or hope."
Sarah: "...You're a weirdo."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Marshall: "Stop handing me more books. Give them to others. I haven't finished the other books yet."
Carolina: "I can't find them with all the detours. But you need to read Animal Farm. You will be tested on it later."
Marshall: "What else will I be tested on?"
Carolina: "Frankenstein, Of Mice and Men...what else?"
Carolina: "I hear footsteps. Crap, both ways are blocked by the cameras."
Marshall: "Mind your language."
Carolina: "Are you kidding me? You're lecturing me about swearing now?"
Marshall: "I hear her coming closer. Go now!"
Sarah: "I heard voices coming from here."
Sarah: "Who were you talking to?"
Marshall: "Nobody."
Sarah: "Is that a book? How did you get a book? Give me that."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Carolina: "You must read 50 Shades of Grey."
Cecelia: "You are kidding me."
Carolina: "I'm not. It will be tested."
Cecelia: "I am not compromising on my morals...how do you know what 50 Shades is about?"
Carolina: "Err, my mother bought a copy."
Cecelia: "Tell me less."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Carolina: "Caitlin! There you are. It was so hard to find your cell."
Caitlin: "I was so bored just sitting around. I could hear all the sirens but I didn't know what was going on."
Caitlin: "I was so bored just sitting around. I could hear all the sirens but I didn't know what was going on."
Carolina: "Sorry about that. Here, read these books. These should keep you occupied."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Avery: "Hello? Is anyone out there? Let me out! I'm innocent I tell you. Innocent!"
Carolina: "Avery? Is that you? Hang on, I need to make sure I'm not in the line of sight of the camera."
Avery: "I'm so glad to see you. Can you get me out?"
Carolina: "Fortunately, yes. They left the key in the hole."
Avery: "Ha! Those dumbasses."
Carolina: "Let's get out of here and avoid the cameras. I have something to show you in the kitchen."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Carolina: "I found those books already. We need to find the Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Macbeth, Crazy Rich Asians, and this book that I'm not quite sure what it's about."
Carolina: "Oh yeah, we need Pyscho too. Avery?"
Carolina: "Seriously?"
Avery: "It's 3am and I'm starvin'. Let a man eat."
Carolina: "Ugh. Fine but be quick. I'll try to find more books in the meantime."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Sarah: "Hey you! Are you the book smuggler?"
Carolina: "Crap! I need to find a room to hide in! That one's empty!"
Sarah: "You're under arrest."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Avery: "Wooh that was a close one. I better shut the door."
Avery: "Hey, Carolina mentioned something about Crazy Rich Asians and some diary. Diary of Anne Frank, Diary of a Wimpy Kid...I'll just take both."
Avery: "I wonder what this computer is for. 'Press here to deactivate the security cameras for 10 minutes'. Uh, I better not touch it."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Mandy: "That's a truckload of books."
Avery: "I put them in my suit and my underpants."
Mandy: "Please stop sharing the details. The less I know, the better."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Cecelia: "Why does it smell so much of sweat?"
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Carolina: "Avery? Are you out there? Please rescue me."
Seraphine: "That was a good nap."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Marshall: "Karma caught up to me. I thought I could leave it all in the past. But I'm still in a jail regardless. Even if it's for a mission."
Marshall: "They knew didn't they? They knew. That's why they had this mission. To punish me for my past. It was just a moment of folly. Did they have to bring it up for entertainment? How is torturing us good TV?"
"1 MINUTE TILL LOCKDOWN."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Carolina: "That idiot!"
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Avery: "An open room!"
Avery: "I'm tired of this horseshit."
Avery: "Oh, there are lots of books here. Othello by William Shakespeare, Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Hamlet by William Shakespeare, King Lear by William Shakespeare..."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●

Mandy: "I still have so many books to go through. I have to speed-read."
Mandy: "I'll start with The Handmaid's Tale."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Avery: "Fuck. The guard is over there. I can't go that way with my books."
Caitlin: "Zzz..."
●◆●◆●◆●
Cecelia: "It's hard to retain all the info when it's midnight and you're tired and have lots of books to read. But I tried my best. And the books stopped coming in towards the end. I'm not sure what happened there but I think it is quite suspicious of Carolina and Avery."
●◆●◆●◆●
It's 5am and the night of smuggling is over. Marshall, Mandy, Cecelia, Seraphine and Caitlin must now write 15 reviews in total based on their reading, one at a time (the order determined randomly). Each correct review earns 10 points and they need at least one to reduce their sentence and be freed immediately, otherwise they have to spend a few more hours in jail and wait for normal office hours to be freed.

●
◆
●
◆
●
Seraphine: "_____ is about two siblings Jem and Scout and their father ______. It talks about the injustice of the American judicial system and prevalent racism. Because the man was blacked, the children were mocked because their family represented him in the case. In the end, he was falsely convicted of ____. I am not familiar with this book."
●◆●◆●◆●
Seraphine: "I am not familiar with most of these. Oh, I know this one. It is a guilty pleasure of mine."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Mandy: "Some reviews have been filled in by Seraphine, so I don't get a chance to touch those. I hope she only filled in those she was confident of."
●◆●◆●◆●
Mandy: "This is To Kill A Mockingbird. I recognise those two names anywhere. It's inspiring to me."
●◆●◆●◆●
Mandy: "This was the last book I read. The Handmaid's Tale."
●◆●◆●◆●
Mandy: "Come on Mandy, think. What is the mother's name?"
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Marshall: "Oh, a Charlotte Bronte novel. It's always very boring. There was only one Charlotte Bronte novel that I read. It should be that."
Marshall: "I read this one to help Carolina because she did not score well in an essay."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Cecelia: "I'm blanking all of a sudden. It must be the fatigue."
●◆●◆●◆●
Cecelia: "This sounds like Frankenstein. This seems simple."
●◆●◆●◆●
Cecelia: "I read this earlier as well."
●◆●◆●◆●
Cecelia: "I'm not sure about this one but I should try."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Caitlin: "Only two left. I have to fill both in."
●◆●◆●◆●
Caitlin: "I have to make a guess."
●
◆
●
◆
●
◆
●
Mandy: "To Kill A Mockingbird is about two siblings Jem and Scout and their father Atticus Finch. It talks about the injustice of the American judicial system and prevalent racism. Because the man was blacked, the children were mocked because their family represented him in the case. In the end, he was falsely convicted of rape."
"Mandy has filled in the first review correctly so she is free to leave."
●◆●◆●◆●
Cecelia: "Frankenstein is the name of a book by Mary Shelley and commonly thought to be the name of the monster. However, it is actually the name of the scientist. The main messages are about familial responsibility."
"Cecelia has completed the second review correctly and is free to go."
●◆●◆●◆●
Caitlin: "Animal Farm is a book about communism told through a bunch of farm animals. Initially, the either of all animals being equal is a tantalising one, but the pigs later corrupt the ideal as they gain control. This is seen through the famous quote: All animals are good, but some animals are better."
"Caitlin has completed the third review correctly and is free to leave."
●◆●◆●◆●
Mandy: "The Handmaid's Tale is a book that is set in New England. It follows the main character Offred who is forced to bear children for the ruling commanders. It is a reminder not to take our rights for granted."
●◆●◆●◆●
Cecelia: "John Green's claim to fame started with this book called The Fault In Our Stars. It is a coming-of-age story about a 16-year-old girl who was diagnosed with cancer and her relationship with another boy in a support group. It is a heartbreaking love story that ends with Augustus dying."
●◆●◆●◆●
"Marshall has filled in the sixth review correctly and is free to go."
●◆●◆●◆●
Seraphine: "The book 50 Shades of Grey was written as a spin-off from the novel Twilight. It tells of a young journalist who works and later dates her boss named Christian Grey. It is about BDSM."
"Seraphine has filled in the seventh review correctly and is free to leave."
●◆●◆●◆●
Cecelia: "Catching Fire is the third book in the Hunger Games series. It is about the heroine Katniss Everdeen and her quest to unify the districts of Capitol in a rebellion against the Capitol. The main theme is about sacrifice for a better future."
●◆●◆●◆●
Marshall: "Of Mice and Men is written by John Steinbeck. It follows George and Lennie, two migrant ranch workers, as they try and find work on Curley family's farm. It is a tragedy set in the Great Depression and the hardships faced by the characters are relatable."
●◆●◆●◆●
●◆●◆●◆●
Marshall: "The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a children's book. It eats everything in sight and later gets a stomachache. It then decides to eat healthily by eating leaves and metamorphosies into a butterfly. The moral of the story is to not eat junk food.
●◆●◆●◆●
Caitlin: "The Lightning Thief follows the story of Percy Jackson. It is based on Roman mythology. Percy learns that he is a demigod and embarks on a quest to prevent a war among the gods. It was very sad when Percy could not save Zeus as he only had three pearls."
●◆●◆●◆●
Seraphine: "Macbeth is a play by William Shakespeare but there is also a book version. He is a general from Scotland who kills the king to take his position, encouraged by his wife and a prophecy from three witches. However, both the husband and wife become paranoid. It is also a taboo to say his name in theatre."
●◆●◆●◆●
Cecelia: "Crazy Rich Asians is a book written by Kevin Kwan and turned into a movie. It is about Rachel, an economics professor who travels to Singapore with her boyfriend Nick Young, only to realise that he is insanely wealthy. It explores new and old wealth and clashes in lifestyles and generational pressure."
●◆●◆●◆●
Mandy: "Psycho is a horror novel about Norman Bates and his mother Norma. Norman is a motel owner who has a domineering mother. He meets a woman on the run because she stole money. She ends up staying at the motel. It is a scary story with many murders that exposes you to mental illness."
●◆●◆●◆●
In conclusion, 12/15 reviews were correctly written, so 120/150 points have been earned for the mission.
