38.01-Paranoia is quite a dangerous bug

Welcome to yet another season of the Smole. On the Smole, there will be a group of contestants taking part in "missions" to earn points for the "pot". Each point will eventually translate to 100 Simoleons. However, among them is the Mole, hired by production to sabotage the missions. The contestants must find out who the Mole is and they will be tested every two episodes via a quiz. The one who scores the lowest will be "executed". This will continue until three remain: two contestants and one Mole. The winning contestant will walk home with whatever points are left in the pot, whereas the Mole walks home with the remainder.

Every season has its twists. This season is no exception. This 38th season, quizzes will no longer be multiple choice. Instead, they will be open ended. One mark will be given to each correct answer, and half a mark will be given for those answers that seem to suggest the contestant knows the Mole, but yet isn't apparently so.

With that out of the way, it's time to introduce our contestants this season.

Keith: "Hi guys. I'm Keith Summers. I'm 22 this year. I'm a med student and currently in my final year. Some things about me: My favourite colour is green, I love punk rock and you can't pry me from lobster thermidor. My studies may take up most of my time but I still find time to keep fit and pursue my hobbies. I used to be a kayaker back in high school. And one of my hobbies includes watching the Smole, so I'm glad to finally be a part of this. It's going to be different from the hospitals, that's for sure."

Benjamin: "'Sup, guys? My name is Benjamin Brenner but please, call me Ben. I'm currently 29 and will turn 30 in two months' time. I work as a business analyst in a large firm. I love EDM, the colour tan and medium-rare lamb chop, oh and basketball too. I'm also married for two years to a lovely woman Emily, and we are enjoying our couples' time right now. I'm here on the Smole to have one hell of a ride! I'm pumped. Aren't you?"

Shirley: "Hello. My name is Shirley DeSota. I'm 30 years old and work as a psychologist. Mental illnesses are too often ignored in our society, and I want to make a change by helping the afflicted. The Smole is a wonderful opportunity to observe the inner workings of the mind, wouldn't you say so? I could learn so much here. Apart from my work, I'm also passionate about classic literature. I enjoy music that speaks to the soul. I also love light blue, like the colour of the sky, as well as sushi. One more quirk about me: I don't believe in retail therapy."

Julie: "Eh, hi. I'm Julie Kanzing. I'm 25 this year and am currently unemployed. But I'm trying! I like listening to pop music, enjoy eating pizza and my favourite colour is pink. In my free time, I watch TV and surf the Net. I don't go out much and don't have a big group of friends, but at least I can say all my friends are the closest I've ever had. I think that should be enough."

Collin: "My name is Collin Ybarra. I am 72 years of age, so pardon me if my thinking or movements are slow. My favourites include: turquoise, sandwiches, oldies and political memoirs. I'm retired but I used to be from the Air Force. I was a lieutenant. I look back fondly at those days, even if I had my fair share of hardship. I also enjoy making new friends and am learning to play chess. I'm here because...well, face it. I've already got one foot in the grave. I've got nothing to lose being here. Let's see what else...did I mention my name yet?"

Ivy: "Good day to all you viewers. I'm Ivy Waxes. I'm 32 but take great pains to ensure I don't look a day over 18. Beauty is my obsession and shopping is my guilty pleasure. I can play snooker and am excellent at darts. I can play the piano and am taking cooking lessons at the moment. My favourite dish to prepare and eat are truffles, but I also like anything with seafood. I like classical music. Mozart is my favourite. Clearly my favourite colour is green but red and orange are a close second. I love making friends too and that's one reason I'm here: because I heard an old friend is too. I aim to win. Do support me!"

Carl: "Hello to everyone out there. I am Carl Shipley. I am 28 years old. I'm currently self employed. I quit my previous job at a marketing firm because there's better money to be made elsewhere. Now I'm selling health supplements because that's the current trend. And I'm enjoying the benefits. My mission here is now to convince more to embrace the money. So, I also like grey, tri-tip steak and T-Swift's my jam. All my life I've been working towards one goal: to get rich. That means working my butt off, getting into the top schools, studying Business and Economics, and I've made it. And I hope others can too."

Robert: "I am Robert Smarter. My age is 45. I am a factory worker. I have a family. My family have 5 of us. I like red. I like roots music. I like fruit salad. I do not like sandwiches. I eat them too much. What I like does not matter because I have a family. I must work for my family. I am here for my family."

Quinn: "I am Quinn Harley. I'm 30 this year and am a chemistry teacher. I'm really fond of creating stuff, and I especially am interested in alchemy. I believe in the supernatural, that magic exists. Hee hee! I'm engaged to Victor Ryan. He's such a hottie and is the perfect fiancé. We currently live with my landlord who also happens to work at the same institution as me, so there is some tension, like she's my mother-in-law or something. Anyway, about me...I like red and cobbler. I have a sweet tooth. I also only like the music Victor creates. He's so talented. Recently my students have been talking about the Smole. I don't want to be seen as the lame teacher, so here I am. I hope I don't go out too soon."

Hannah: "My name is Hannah Voltremore, aka she who shall not be named. It's a running gag. I love Harry Potter. I'm 34 years old and love children. I'm married and we are in the midst of family planning. I think, that after 3 years, we are finally ready for a young one in our family. I love beachy colours, like sandy yellow. I enjoy high tea with my friends. My favourite is Earl Grey. I work as a manager of a grocery store, which may have influenced my tastes. Nowadays I prefer homemade food, like stu surprise. I'm also a kid at heart, always seeking adventure. I've got an acquired taste to kids' movies and music. And being the kid at heart, I finally decided to sign up for the Smole. Get ready to be blown away."

Abbie: "Hello! I am Abbie Cielle Defghi, but everyone who knows me calls me Abbie C. Defghi. I'm 22 years old and love pink. Since young, I have always dreamed of being a princess. That is why my favourite Smole contestant is Poppy La Tootie. If she can be on the Smole, so can I. I don't have a job but being a full time princess would be amazing. It would be a dream come true. I think that the soundtracks on children's shows are one of the most incredible things. I also love peanut butter on anything! On bread, on biscuits, on ice cream, as long as it's got peanut butter, it's my number one food. I hope that everyone can live in harmony in this world, which is why I'm most moved by humanitarian efforts in times of crisis. I once volunteered at Red Cross for a very short while. Am I talking too much? Silly me. Bye bye!"

"I am Morgan Lowell. I am 36 years old. I am the CEO of a megacorporation specialising in trading services. I recently got married and have only returned from our honeymoon before I set off for the Smole. I can't be tied down to one location. I love travelling and seeing what the world has to offer. I think frog legs are an interesting delicacy of the French. I also do quite like French music, especially their operas. Black is my favourite colour. It's so sleek and professional. I tend to get cold easily which is why I always prefer warmer climates. If you see my travel history I go to the tropics a lot. Fine dining and good wine is also something I enjoy. I do hope I make it to the finale, either as the winner, the runner up or the Mole. I think that role could be quite interesting."

Contestants are going about their first mission. They have been paried up. One half will have to memorise a question and the answers, then run up the hill to convey this to their partner, who must give the correct answer to earn 10 points. They will then swap their roles. This is worth 120 points in total and this mission will take place pair by pair. The fastest pair will earn an exemption.

Benjamin is up first.

He will need to relay the question and answers to Keith.

Benjamin: "The four seasons are: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. What is another name for Autumn?
A: Fall
B: Maple
C: Equinox
D: Rise."

Benjamin: "Seriously? This is such an easy question."

"Julie, it is your turn now."

*
*
*

Shirley: "Oh, I see Ben. That means my turn will be soon."

Benjamin: "This is quite the workout. I wonder how any of them will make it up in one piece."

Benjamin: "A is the anwer but what were the others...?"

Keith: "Hit me."
Benjamin: "Let me catch my breath first. Okay, there are four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. What is another name for Autumn?
A: Fall
B: Er....Maple!"

Benjamin: "What were the others...ah! C is Equinox and D..shit, what's D?"

Benjamin: "Rose...no...ah, rise! D is Rise!"
Keith: "Is this even a question?"

Keith: "The answer is clearly A: Fall."

"That is correct."
Keith: "If all the questions are this easy, we'll have this mission in the bag."
Benjamin: "Now it's your turn."

*
*
*

Julie: "Which of the following is an author?
A: Kurt Cobain
B: Joseph Heller
C: Pierre Curie
D: Allen Lane."

Julie: "I don't know if I can remember this."

Julie: "Eh..I'm nervous. But I must do my best."

Julie: "Author...Kurt Cobain, Joseph Heller, Pierre Curie, Allen Lane."

*
*
*

Julie: "I'm not good at running."

Shirley: "I wonder what's taking her so long."

Julie: "I should at least run the final stretch."

Julie: "Hff..hff..."
Shirley: "You can do it!"

Julie: "Who...who's an...an author..."
Shirley: "Take it easy. Slow, deep breaths."

Shirley: "That's right. Now let's start over, shall we?"
Julie: "Hff...okay. Eh, who is an author? A: Kurt Cobain, B: Joseph Heller, C: Pierre Currie or D..."

Julie: "Oh no! I forgot what D is! I don't want to have to run back down. I think, eh, I think it's Ellen Rayner."

Shirley: "Do you want to double check?"
Julie: "There isn't time for that. It's so far away! My legs are killing me!"

Julie: "Do you doubt me?"
Shirley: "I just think we should err on the side of caution."

Shirley: "But if you don't want to, it's fine. I won't pressure you."

Shirley: "Lucky for you, I know Joseph Heller is an author. What option was that again?"
Julie: "Eh, I think it was B ."

Shirley: "Then B."
"That is correct."
Julie: "Phew."

*
*
*

Collin: "There is no way I can remember. I'll pick the easiest question not used yet."

Collin: "Hmm...How many inches is equal to 12 centimeters?
A: 4.73 inches
B: 5.74 inches
C: 6.75 inches
D: 7.76 inches."

Collin: "So many numbers..."

Collin: "Whew, I'm tired. That was too much running for me."

Carl: "That old geezer barely ran."

Carl: "He better not stand in the way of me and my money."

*
*
*

Collin: "Huff...how many...er,...cents is 12 inches. Wait, that's not right."

Collin: "Let me think again. How many inches is my..."

Carl: "I'm gonna stop you there. Do you want to go back down and check again?"

Collin: "Are you intending to kill me? It's pointless. Just let me try and recall. I think it was about conversion of units."

Carl: "Inches and centimeters?"
Collin: "Yeah. That's it."
Carl: "You could have said so earlier. What are the options?"
Collin: "Er...4, 5, 6, 7."

Collin: "No wait...blasted brain."
Carl: "You may be in need of some brain supplements. But we'll discuss that later."
Collin: "I think A was 4.7...and so on."

Carl: "Ugh. You'll be the death of me. But I can only go by what you told me, so the answer should be A."
"That is correct."
Carl: "Wow. You're lucky."

Collin: "This mission is not for me."

*
*
*

Robert: "What is another name for tungsten?
A: Ionica
B: Lightwire
C: Ferrum
D: Wolfram."

Robert: "Name for tungsten...Ionica, Lightwire, Ferrum, Wolfram...name for tungsten...Ionica, Lightwire, Ferrum, Wolfram..."

Robert: "I must remember. Name for tungsten..."

*
*
*

Robert: "I am here!"
Ivy: "Finally."

Robert: "What is the name of tungsten...Ionica, Wolfberry...no. A is Ionica, B is...Lightwire, C is Ferrum and D is Wolfram."

Ivy: "Tungsten? Are we talking about patents? I don't know. I'll just guess D: Wolfram."

"That is correct."
Robert: "You are smart."

*
*
*

Quinn: "Which question should I pick?"

Quinn: "I'll take this one. Which of the following are not chess pieces?
A: Knight
B: Castle
C: King
D: Bishop."

Quinn: "Easy. It's not called a castle. It's a rook."

*
*
*

Quinn: "Abbie, huff...hang on."

Quinn: "Which of the following is not a chess piece?
A: Knight
B: Castle
C: Bishop
D: King."

Abbie: "Is it the king? No that cannot be right. I don't play chess. I know the castle definitely exists...wait, is it called a castle?"

Abbie: "Silly me. Castles can't move. The answer is B!"
"That is correct."
Abbie: "Yay!"
Quinn: "Good job. I was worried there for a second."

*
*
*

Hannah: "My strategy is to do my best and earn points. I'm curious to see if I'll still be suspected regardless. Paranoia is quite a dangerous bug."

Morgan: "Hmm...how many players are there in a water polo team?
A: 5
B: 6
C: 7
D: 8."

*
*
*

Morgan: "Hoo...hoo..."
Hannah: "Morgan! I'm coming!"

Hannah: "Tell me my question."
Morgan: "Let me compose myself first."

Morgan: "Hmm...I don't remember exactly, but I think it asked for the number of players in water polo."

Morgan: "A is 5, B is 6, C is 7 and D is 8."
Hannah: "I'm not familiar with water polo."

Morgan: "Such an odd question indeed."
Hannah: "Statistically speaking, it should be C."

"That is correct."
Hannah: "Yeah!"
Morgan: "Good guess."

*
*
*

Second round starts. The roles have been reversed.

Benjamin: "Now is a good time to observe...but I can't spot him."

Keith: "Who sang Dirty Little Secret?
A: Green Day
B: Fall Out Boy
C: Boys Like Girls
D: The All-American Rejects."

Keith: "This feels like something Ben should know. He came from this era, didn't he?"

*
*
*

Keith: "Green fall boys rejects."
Benjamin: "What are you mumbling about?"

Keith: "Who sang Dirty Little Secret?
A: Green Day
B: Fall Out Boy
C: The All-American Rejects."

Keith: "D...hold on. Green fall boy rejects...D should be All-American Rejects. C is Boys Like Girls."

Benjamin: "90s music, huh? I heard this on the radio plentiful."

Benjamin: "If my memory serves me correctly, it's D, The All-American Rejects."

"That is correct."
Benjamin: "Yeah!"
Keith: "Woohoo!"

*
*
*

Shirley: "Which of these is an Ivy League School?
A: Yale University
B: University of California, Berkeley
C: Stanford University
D: Massachussetts Institute of Technology."

Shirley: "YBSMIT. Yeebeesmit. Got it."

*
*
*

Shirley: "Almost there...Yeebeesmit, Yeebeesmit..."

Shirley: "I need to....get out....more..."

Shirley: "Huff..."

Shirley: "Which...of these...is an Ivy League?
A: Yale
B: Berkley
C: Stanford, or
D: MIT?"

Julie: "I don't know. I don't study at an Ivy League. I only went to community college."

Julie: "I'm not smart."

Shirley: "It doesn't matter. This should be well-known."
Julie: "Sorry to have upset you."

Shirley: "I'm not upset. Just try your best, okay? It doesn't matter if you're wrong."
Julie: "Then...Yale. I think it's the most prestigious."

"That is correct."
Julie: "What a relief."

*
*
*

Carl: "When was Marilyn Monroe born?
A: 24 September 1942
B: 11 July 1910
C: 1 June 1926
D: 18 October 1931."

Carl: "This is a tough question. But if anyone should know, it's the oldest contestant here."

*
*
*

Collin: "Why am I here again?"
Carl: "At last...huff!"

Collin: "Oh right, the mission. I remember now."
Carl: "Tell me you know this."

Carl: "When was Marilyn Monroe born?"

Carl: "A is 2...er..."

Carl: "Screw it. A is 1942, B is 1910, C is 1926 and D is 1931."

Collin: "What was the question again?"

Carl: "When was Marilyn Monroe born?"
Collin: "Oh, right...I forgot the first two options. C was 1926 and D was 1991...no way she's born in 1991, so the answer is C."

"That is correct."
Carl: "I'm on to you."
Collin: "Who are you again?"

*
*
*

Ivy: "How many bones are there in the human body?
A: 106
B: 206
C: 306
D: 406."

Ivy: "1, 2, 3, 4. That's easy to remember."

*
*
*

Ivy: "That was too tiring."

Ivy: "Halfway through I decided to stop running. I'm not after the exemption. There's a 1 in 9 or 1 in 10 chance that I'm going home."

Robert: "I am ready."

Ivy: "How many bones are there in the body?"

Ivy: "The options are...hmm..."

Ivy: "A is 105, B is 206, C is 307 and D is for 408."

Robert: "I do not receive a lot education. I do not know."

Robert: "We had no money for school. I wish for my kids to not be like me."

Robert: "Let me try to count."

Robert: "1...2...3...4...I only count 4."

Robert: "I will just say B."
"That is correct."

Ivy: "Woo! I thought this was common knowledge though. And sorry, my mind got a little frazzled form the running. I think the options were 106, 206, 306 and 406."

*
*
*

Abbie: "This sounds fun."

Abbie: "What comes next: shack, shark, stark, _____?
A: Shack
B: Tony
C: Stork
D: Slack."

*
*
*

Quinn: "And here she comes."

Abbie: "Quick, before I forget."

Abbie: "What comes next? Stark, ___?"

Abbie: "A: Shack, B: Tony, C: Stork, D: Slack."

Quinn: "I don't get it."
Abbie: "Neither do I. Let me think too."
Quinn: "By elimination, it's not Tony Stark. Is it A? Or is it...C, stork?"

"That is correct."
Quinn: "That's good."

Quinn: "I saw that question when I was down there. She gave me a word ladder with only one rung. If I hadn't seen the question before that I would never have known."

Abbie: "Quinn came up to me after the mission to confront me about missing out information. But that's not true. She lied. I know for sure that I conveyed everything perfectly. She's just trying to confuse me."

*
*
*

Hannah: "There's only one question left."

Hannah: "I hope I can memorise this accurately."

*
*
*

Hannah: "Morgan...at last..."

Hannah: "Ack! I think I forgot the question. I need to run back down. Excuse me!"

*
*
*

Hannah: "Oh my back is so sore. And I'm sweaty all over. But at least I remember the question now."

Hannah: "Morgan, how many tentacles does Squidward have? A is 6, B is 4, C is 7 and D is 8."

Morgan: "How interesting. I think it should be 4 legs."

Hannah: "The question is on tentacles."
Morgan: "Oh. Then it probably is 8, right? But that's a question that would insult my intelligence."
Hannah: "It's about Squidward."
Morgan: "Squidward...I hardly watch the show. But it does seem like 8 was too many. He was odd. My final answer is A: 6."

"That is correct."
Hannah: "Good job, Morgan. I'm sure everyone avoided this question for a reason, so I'm glad you managed to answer it right. Though, you could have posed it to me. I would know this."

*
*
*

All 12 questions were answered correctly, so 120/120 points have been earned. But which duo gets the first exemption?

Benjamin and Keith took 34 minutes and 15 seconds.
Julie and Shirley took 59 minutes and 46 seconds.
Collin and Carl took 53 minutes and 4 seconds.
Robert and Ivy took 39 minutes.
Quinn and Abbie took 34 minutes and 11 seconds.
Morgan and Hannah took 55 minutes and 12 seconds.

Hence, Quinn and Abbie earn the very first exemption this season.
