44.Bonus-Season 0 Mystery

Looking for an answer to the Season 0 Mystery (i.e. the final mission in Season 44)? Here is the solution:

Firstly, we know that there are eight contestants:
  • Adam Keeper
  • Bjorn Bruijn
  • June Nightingale
  • May Wizard
  • Melvin Thomas
  • Olga Ellis
  • Peter Hoffman
  • Yvette Hedrick

There were 3 journals on the table. These journals belonged to Melvin, Adam and Yvette.

Maximillian: "Yvette only wrote about parachuting. I think that's the first mission. She must have been executed first."

Yvette only wrote about one mission and stopped there. We can deduce that that would be the first mission and this implies that Yvette is 8th.

  • Adam Keeper
  • Bjorn Bruijn
  • June Nightingale
  • May Wizard
  • Melvin Thomas
  • Olga Ellis
  • Peter Hoffman
  • Yvette Hedrick - 8th

The journals of Melvin and Adam contain more information.

Maximillian: "Adam wrote about four missions too..."

Adam wrote notes about the first four missions. This would imply that he had been through 4 missions, which would make him 5th place.

His journal also has many drawings but only one is of importance: the one with six in a circle. The six names are: May, Peter, Adam, Melvin, Olga and June. These are the final six. This means that Bjorn and Yvette are 7th and 8th. Since Yvette is 8th, Bjorn is 7th.

  • Adam Keeper
  • June Nightingale
  • May Wizard
  • Melvin Thomas
  • Olga Ellis
  • Peter Hoffman
  • Bjorn Bruijn - 7th
  • Yvette Hedrick - 8th

Melvin's journal is orgnanised such that each contestant gets a few pages. It mentions four missions. However, that would make Melvin 5th too. There is no indication of a double execution and it would be unlikely for a first season, so something is off somewhere...

Let's try and figure out the missions.

Maximillian: "Yvette only wrote about parachuting. I think that's the first mission. She must have been executed first."

We know that the first mission is about parachuting.

Lucy: "Mission 2: June dropped the ball at the starting point. Peter threw the furthest..."

The second mission involves throwing a ball.

The third mission has to do with six contestants in a circle.

Tiffany: "There is a summary of a mission here. Contestants have to play musical chairs, where one contestant is eliminated each time. There were 4 rounds to this and the ultimate winner would get an exemption."

Knowing that there are four rounds and each round one is eliminated, this means that five contestants took part in this mission. This would imply that this is the fourth mission.

Maximillian: "So Olga jumped in the first mission, threw decently in the second mission, Olga was completely useless in the third mission and in the next mission only recognised 2 songs."

Adam's journal mentions this but Melvin's does not. However, Melvin's journal mentions a different mission that is not found in Adam's journal (recognising songs).

The photographs of Yvette, Melvin and June can be found. All have a red thumpbrint on it indicating they were executed. We know this line of thought is true because we know Yvette is executed, so if all have the red thumbprint, June and Melvin are also executed.

Going back to Melvin's journal, on the last page there are 4 "Get Well Soon" signatures. On the top of the page writes "I'm so happy that every single one of them wished me good health. We are like family." This implies that Melvin made it to the final 5 at least since everyone else signed on his journal.

However, this still does not clear up who between Melvin and Adam is 5th. So we look to the quiz archives instead.

From here, we see five quiz results. June does not appear in the final five, meaning that June is 6th since she is executed from the photographs.

  • Adam Keeper
  • May Wizard
  • Melvin Thomas
  • Olga Ellis
  • Peter Hoffman
  • June Nightingale - 6th
  • Bjorn Bruijn - 7th
  • Yvette Hedrick - 8th

Olga's is underlined. As seen on the official Smole wiki/fansite, when someone scores the lowest the score is either underlined or italicised. Hence we can guess that Olga scored the lowest. However, she is safe as indicated by the stamp beside her name. That means someone scored the same as her but was slower and was thus executed as 5th. We expect this to either be Adam or Melvin.

All the different answers are shown above. Adam and Melvin have four answers that differ from the rest, just like Olga.  However, this is not very reliable. So instead we turn back to the journals, which lists how they answered.

At this point, Adam says that he is going all out on Peter. Melvin says that he is not very sure, so he will answer the first two questions on May, the next two on Olga, the next two on Adam and the last four questions will be with May and Adam in mind.

Melvin also notes that Adam is extremely accurate on quizzes and has perfect knowledge. He has photographic memory and will never answer a question in way that he did not intend.

Knowing this, Peter is option A. Adam or May is option E. Noting also that the final five all have a quiz result and one of them must be the Mole, it is possible that the Mole's quiz result is the correct answer key. With this in mind, let us try possible options:

a.   Peter is the Mole. However, Peter is A in the quiz but he answered E for the last question. Peter is thus unlikely to be the Mole.

b.   Adam or Melvin is the Mole. However, both of them have an incomplete journal. The journals show no sign of destruction or wear and tear. This implies that they did not participate in the full season, or were executed.

c.   Olga is the Mole. However, given that there is an underline for her result and the "SAFE" stamp, it is highly likely she is a contestant and not the Mole.

d.   May is the Mole. Going with this train of thought, Adam scored 6, Peter scored 10, Melvin scored 8 and Olga scored 6. We have two contestants with the same lowest score: Adam and Olga. If Olga is safe, Adam must be executed. We can finally confirm that Adam is 5th.

Alternatively...

We know that Olga scored the lowest. What matters is not their actual scores but how many more questions they got correct than Olga. Let's first assume that all the highlighted answers that are different from the rest are wrong for Olga.

This means everyone got at least 1 more correct answer than Olga (Q4) except for Adam, who got Q4 correct but got Q6 wrong whereas Olga got it correct.

Let us assume now that Q4 is wrong, Q9 is wrong and Q10 is wrong. Adam has at least 3 wrong answers, the same as Olga. Assuming A is correct for Q9, then Peter and May have at most 2 wrong answers than Olga. Melvin also has 3 wrong answers than Olga

Let us now look at it if Olga had only two wrong answers. Assume that Q4 and Q10 are wrong (which are the most likely to be wrong). This leads to Melvin having the most wrong answers. This cannot be true as Olga must have the most wrong answers.

Testing out with various possibilities, Adam is the one with the highest probability to tie with Olga for lowest, making Adam 5th.

  • May Wizard
  • Melvin Thomas
  • Olga Ellis
  • Peter Hoffman
  • Adam Keeper - 5th
  • June Nightingale - 6th
  • Bjorn Bruijn - 7th
  • Yvette Hedrick - 8th

There is a reason why the three journals were left behind intact. Adam's journal mentions that the producers seem to be gearing towards the journals being a hint, given their emphasis on it. The names of the three contestants' journals is indeed a clue to the Mole: Melvin, Adam and Yvette. MAY. May is the Mole.

  • Melvin Thomas
  • May Wizard - Mole
  • Olga Ellis
  • Peter Hoffman
  • Adam Keeper - 5th
  • June Nightingale - 6th
  • Bjorn Bruijn - 7th
  • Yvette Hedrick - 8th

Let us revisit Melvin's journal. Melvin had 4 missions, like Adam who is 5th. He also has "Get Well Soon" messages on his journal. A plausible explanation is that Melvin fell sick and could not participate in one of the missions. Melvin missed the fourth mission but took part in a later mission, which means the lowest placing he could have gotten was fourth. However, in his journal, Olga, Peter and May are all referenced to have been involved in the mission. This implies this is the final 4 mission. Given that only 4 missions can be gleaned from his journal, Melvin is 4th.

  • Olga Ellis
  • May Wizard - Mole
  • Peter Hoffman
  • Melvin Thomas - 4th
  • Adam Keeper - 5th
  • June Nightingale - 6th
  • Bjorn Bruijn - 7th
  • Yvette Hedrick - 8th

At the entrance, it is stated to input 6 contestants in order. Then, take the first letter of each line to get the password. Password for what?

Maximillian: "A password is required. Of course."

The password is for the computer. The names that can be inputted are:

  • May Wizard
  • Melvin Thomas
  • Adam Keeper
  • June Nightingale
  • Bjorn Bruijn
  • Yvette Hedrick

The correct password is thus: MMAJBY. Once this is answered, we will get access to a file with the final quiz results of Peter and Olga.

Earlier we learned that Peter is option A for the last question of the quiz. That will never change, since the only time that option will change for each contestant is if a contestant that came before them on that question was executed. In other words, Peter is A and Olga put A. It is likely that Olga suspected Peter whereas Peter suspected May, who was the last option at the final five quiz and is now the last option in the final quiz (option C). With no other information to go on, Peter is first and Olga is third.

  • Peter Hoffman - 1st
  • May Wizard - Mole
  • Olga Ellis - 3rd
  • Melvin Thomas - 4th
  • Adam Keeper - 5th
  • June Nightingale - 6th
  • Bjorn Bruijn - 7th
  • Yvette Hedrick - 8th
